Couples therapy, couples counseling, or couples coaching can be one of the most transformative and powerful foundation building experiences of someone’s life. Making the decision to go to couples therapy, counseling, or coaching can be difficult. After Googling “couples therapy,” a bunch of random people’s websites come up.. therapists, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors..
Couples Therapy or Counseling
The word “therapy” can be used to describe many different styles and modes of treatment. Counseling is a much broader term that has different meanings depending on which state you’re in. The words themselves are pretty much interchangeable, however, the biggest difference when these words are in someone’s title, could be education (like a career counselor vs a marriage counselor).
While all ‘psychotherapists’ or ‘therapists’ have a Master’s Degree, not all counselors do. Therapists, or counselors, are trained to be able to detect things that a coach may not be able to, such as depressive symptoms, signs of bi-polar disorder, etc. If you or your partner have any history or mental health diagnosis, I highly encourage you to work with a couples therapist or a coach that is also a therapist (like me!). Therapy, or psychotherapy, has to be done within the same state that the therapist is licensed and can be reimbursed by some insurance companies.
Coaching is a lot more directive than therapy. However, you can take the therapist out of therapy, but you can’t take the therapy out of the therapist. I call the coaching that I do therapeutic coaching™ because its not your traditional coach-client relationship. Because of my training as a psychotherapist, I’m able to navigate with more tools and provide you with understanding, empathy, and direction.
You get the education and skills of a therapist with the training of a certified relationship coach. Now, here’s the thing. Because coaching isn’t a medically regulated field like therapy is, we can meet across state lines. This means that no matter where you live – we can work together! It also means that insurance won’t reimburse. BUT, in some cases, HSA will cover it.
